RunKeeper, it’s what keeps my runs   Leave a comment

Just to be clear before I get going, running is not one of my favourite exercises and exercising is not one of my favourite things to do.  However running burns calories and keeps my heart pumping.   So, that said, I have been looking for an app that would record my efforts and store them somewhere easy to access and give me meaningful feedback.  I have been using HandyRunner for a few months now and it has performed well but I needed/wanted something more.

So after a search through the market for running apps and apps associated with running apps I found RunKeeper.  It does the same job as HandyRunner but it does the thing I really wanted, that was to tell my how far I have gone and how long I have been going while on the move.  The reason I needed/wanted this feature was because I don’t usually plan out my routes I just tend to just pull on my running shoes and head out.  I always found it a pain, while on the move, to pull out my phone, unlock it and check my progress.  With RunKeeper I no longer need to do this as it will keep me updated at intervals of my choosing, this could be either time, distance or both.  So enough background, lets take a  look at the actual app before you grow tired of the waffle and move onto a different review. 3uk and Froyo, you just have to laugh   Leave a comment

Hello no-one

I am so pleased that I didn’t wait for 3 to roll out Froyo for my Desire.  After they rolled it out they (like just about every other UK mobile provider) had to recall it because there special customisations had screwed it up.  Apparently they released the update 14/10/2010 and pulled it 11 days later.  The reason they had to pull it was because it was preventing people from accessing the market place, they were suggesting that you needed to do a factory reset to get it working again.  Not a difficult thing to do but I would had been really pissed to start loading all my apps again and messing around with my home screen to get it just the way I like it.

What really makes me laugh is how they made such a big deal, on their blog, about how rigorously their testing process was and that they would not be having the same problems that other carriers, who add they own crapware, were having.  I think all the carriers here in the Uk rolled out Froyo just to have to pull it as their customisations had screwed it up.

UK carriers, still, seem to think that they are dealing with dumb phones and they can stick there logo’s and crapware on easily with no come backs, well it just isn’t happening.  When are they going to learn to just leave stuff alone?  If they had just rolled out the HTC Sense version of Froyo they would not have had these issues, 3 users would not have had to wait months for what was already available and I would still have a phone I didn’t need a gold card in to get my very prompt HTC updates.

Someday my fellow countrymen, who don’t read enough about their new pocket PC’s, will get Froyo but I wouldn’t count on 3 getting right next time either.  Maybe by then I will have moved to CyanogenMod, I just need to grow a big enough pair of balls to get back into rooting my phone and flashing custom ROMs.

So wishing you a happy Halloween, ciao and peace out.
